It should be protocol to do a once over check of the van before you head off on your next trip. Making sure all your gear is in working order before you hit the road will assure you a hassle free break; however there are always the odd few that need reminding.

Australia’s leading tyre retailer Beaurepaires is urging motorists to check the condition of their caravan tyres before departing for summer holiday road trips.

According to Beaurepaires’ General Manager Chris Muir, caravan tyres can pose a huge safety threat on our roads because they are often bought out of the garage and put straight onto the road without safety and condition checks.

“This really is a recipe for disaster. Unsafe tyres make for unsafe roads – and an unacceptably high number of road accidents are caused by tyres that are in poor condition,” said Mr Muir.

Here are some tips from Beaurepairs for checking tyres

-Carefully inspect all tyres, including spares, checking tread surfaces and both sidewalls for road damage and surface cracking.

-Ensure the tyres are not worn out by checking that the tread is not worn down to the tread wear indicators (these can be found by looking at the tread in line with the triangle symbol or TWI sign in the upper sidewall)

-Make sure that all tyres are the same size and type.

-Make sure that the Service Descriptions engraved on each tyre comply with the requirements of the caravan tyre placard. The Service Descriptions indicate the maximum load and maximum speed rating that the tyres can handle.

-Make sure tyres have enough air in them. To determine the actual pressure required the van should be weighed in fully-loaded condition when ready to travel (this can be done on a weighbridge). With these known tyre loads a suitable inflation pressure can be obtained from tables. Use these pressures and check them regularly

Beaurepaires can help you with this and is offering free tyre safety checks throughout the summer period and beyond to encourage motorists to ensure their tyres and cars are in peak condition for long road trips.
