TimDevil’s Teeth by Susan Casey The Farallon Islands are a set of rocky outcrops that lie about 50km west of San Francisco in the Pacific Ocean. The area endures some of the most severe weather conditions in the world and is a completely untamed wilderness. It’s also home to the world’s largest population of adult Great White Sharks. Journalist Susan Casey became intrigued by two biologists with the lonely job of manning the islands and studying these 20-foot monster sharks in a very small boat. This book is the result of the time she spent on the Islands with the two dedicated biologists. The history, geography and sheer brutality of the Farallons makes for pretty fascinating reading, and the close encounters with huge sharks make it a real page-turner. |

CarlyHolding Yawulyu by Zohl De Ishtar I read this book in anticipation of my NT trip. It tells the story of the author who lives with Indigenous women elders for two years to learn their traditions and help set up a cultural centre. The book is set in the Great Sandy Desert and is a true story. I recommend this book to those that are interested in the differences between white and Indigenous cultures and how we can live in modern society with the two. |
